Traditional Use
In Asia, it has been traditionally used for centuries to address fatigue, burnout, altitude sickness, low libido, and other issues (Berovič et al., 2024). Precisely because of their beneficial effects on well-being, wild-harvested mushrooms can reach prices of up to €50,000 per kilogram, while their natural habitats are increasingly scarce, and in some areas collection has even been restricted or prohibited.
Innovative Cultivation Methods for Cordyceps
Fortunately, researchers from Slovenian company MycoMedica have successfully cultivated this fungus under laboratory conditions, following organic production guidelines and without any animal-derived ingredients. As part of a development and research project funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Slovenian companies MycoMedica and Kobis developed a dietary supplement through specialized cultivation methods that contains the highest concentration of the active compound cordycepin (Bird et al., 2022).

Promising Research Results and Studies
In recent decades, scientists worldwide have been investigating the numerous medicinal properties of Cordyceps through clinical studies. Slovenian researchers from the Department of Rheumatology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, in collaboration with MycoMedica, are studying the effects of bioactive compounds from Cordyceps on inflammation and collagen production in the lung cells of patients with COPD (Bajželj et al., 2022). Researchers have also explored Cordyceps’s potential antiviral properties, including its ability to inhibit viral replication and reduce the incidence of seasonal colds, which are more common in spring (Kumar Verma, 2020). Its effects against COVID-19 have also been investigated (Dubhashi et al., 2023). Additionally, studies have examined the potential of Ophiocordyceps sinensis in combination with various therapies to influence thyroid function. The authors noted that higher-quality research is needed to confirm these effects (Wei et al., 2023).
